Lee Morgan - Shrine of Masters Gallery in Harlem (13 photos)
40 years ago, Lee Morgan was murdered while he was about to perform onstage at Slugs, a jazz club in the East Village.
Lena Sherrod, the executive director of the Shrine of Masters (SOM) Jazz Gallery in Harlem put together this event to commemorate and honor him, as well as Jim Harrison from Jazz Mobile.
The speakers included legends like Larry Ridley, Louis Hayes and Harold Mabern.
The SOM Gallery houses a permanent collection dedicated to the life and music of Lee Morgan.

The James Carter Organ Trio (14 photos)
James Carter is a beast. He's equally adept on the baritone, tenor and soprano sax, in addition to the bass clarinet and flute. His cousin is violinist, Regina Carter. I had the privilege of reviewing her album, 'Reverse Thread' last year.

Syl Johnson - Complete Mythology (6 photos)
Easily, one of the most neglected soul singers of the 60s and 70s. Kudos to Numero Group for delivering this boxset. Syl has paid his dues. He's getting the recognition he deserves now.
This boxset is one of the biggest bargains there is at the asking price. To put it in perspective, an original pressing of 'Is it because I'm Black' will run you several hundred dollars.

A few snaps I took at an Esperanza performance I covered, circa summer of 2008. Glad to see her gain recognition beyond the jazz world. She definitely deserves it.
